complete This is the gzip-standard metapackage. It pulls in all subpackages of gzip-standard.
primary GZIP (GNU zip) is a popular data compression program written by Jean-Loup Gailly for the GNU project. This program was developed as a replacement for compress because of the UNISYS and IBM patents covering the LZW algorithm used by compress. These patents made it impossible to legally use compress, so a replacement was need. The superior compression ratio of GZIP is just a bonus.
man This is the man page subpackage of the gzip-standard port.
